The Cost of Bad PowerPoint Presentations

Have You Read the News?

The Wall Street Journal reports that each day over 30 million PowerPoint presentations are given around the world. They also estimate that…

bad PowerPoint presentations are costing companies $252 million dollars per day in wasted time

In his November 11, 2006 article in THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, journalist Jared Sandberg offered Tips for PowerPoint: Go Easy on the Text; Please, Spare Us. His article included several thought-provoking zingers worthy of sharing:

  • PowerPoint software has been blamed for boring people senseless. The phrase “Death by PowerPoint” is common corporate expression.
  • If so many people dread PowerPoint presentations, why do we still see so many of them?
  • PowerPoint routinely disrupts and trivializes content. PowerPoint is a great crutch.
  • Don’t go special-effects crazy with flying text. It may enhance your PowerPoint, but not your point.
  • People tell everyone but the presenter of their boredom – civility only reinforces the problem
  • PowerPoint presentations are like corporate karaoke. For the most part, it’s tough to listen to. We all applaud each other, even though we know how bad it stinks.
